Sport and Public Service Students volunteer at local sports event

On Thursday the 24th June, Sport and Public services students went to Costello Stadium in Hull to volunteer at the Yorkshire and Humberside Deaf athletics event as part of working towards the NCFE level 2 award in volunteering. Organised by The English Federation of Disability Sport,(EFDS)which is an organisation dedicated to Disability Sport. Their aim is to be the united voice of disability sport seeking to promote inclusion and achieve equality of sporting opportunities for disabled people. Twelve schools from all over the region took part in athletics events such as javelin, high jump and running events and involved athletes of all ages and abilities.

The Students helped out with officiating duties, recording results as well as equipment set up. This is the second event Bishop Burton College Students have volunteered at a specialist sports event. Previously they travelled to the Keymote Stadium at Doncaster to undertake similar roles and gain experience.

Ben Henderson from First Diploma sport was helping out with the discus event at Costello and said ‘It’s interesting to get involved at something like this. I have to think of different ways to communicate to the athletes, not just relying on talking to them. I always enjoy coming to events like this.’

Bishop Burton Colleges winning Sports teams

For the first time, the College was allowed to participate in the BUCS league as part of a pilot study allowing HE students at FE education establishments to play against other Universities under our own name. The 2009/10 BUCS season started well for both Bishop HE teams. The football team notched up a 10-0 win against Hull Uni and the Rugby team won 69-0 also against Hull Uni. The winning streak continued for both teams with further wins. It was clear at this point that both Bishop teams were easily coping with competition and as the fixtures were fulfilled it soon looked like both teams could finish in the top two.

In total the HE football team only played six competitive fixtures in the BUCS league winning four, losing one and claiming the points on one. The HE football team’s last fixture was against Grimsby Institute who along with Leeds City College had dominated the competition. Leeds City College had lost a few points towards the end so it was between Bishop and Grimsby to fight it out for the top spot. In the end Grimsby conceded the game due to difficulties in fielding a team so the points went to Bishop who would have rather got the points through playing but were still very happy to win their league. Led by Captain Luke Duerden, who showed great leadership in this new more competitive league and is confirmed as Club Captain for next season. Other key players were Ben Asquith in right back and Chris Young who always played solidly on the left with Nick Robinson and Olly Burns forming a strong partnership up front.

The HE Rugby team had eight games and was the only FE/HE establishment in their league. In total they had eight fixtures and won 6, lost one and also claimed the points for the last match. This resulted in coming second in the league to Leeds Met only on virtue of points scored. The Rugby scholars had a massive impact on the Rugby team bringing with them a higher level of skill and knowledge which rubbed off on the whole team. Lawrence Pearce leading by example as Captain on the pitch and showing why himself and Ben Dorrington were picked for the Yorkshire under 20’s team.

Due to the excellent final placings, both teams got promoted and are looking forward to another challenging sporting year in the BUCS league

The FE teams also had a good season with each team putting in some solid performances and achieving some fantastic results, particularly the FE rugby team
The FE Rugby team were in a league against East Riding College, Wyke and Scarborough 6th Form. After some easy wins and some good solid play from John Gitau and Chris Bradshaw it was a bit of a shock to draw against Scarborough and even worse to lose against East Riding College in November. However out of the 6 fixtures in that league, we won 3, lost 1, drew 1 and claimed the points on one. This resulted in the FE Rugby team winning the BCS league for the first time by 6 points.

Third time not so lucky for Bishop Burton's hockey team

On Wednesday the 24th March, Bishop Burton faced Huddersfield New College for the third time this season having beaten them twice already this season. However with a weakened team due to injuries it made the task of beating them for a third time much more difficult with them being a strong organised team.
Bishop hit off the match and passed the ball around well but Huddersfield held their defence strong. Huddersfield then got the ball and put large amounts of pressure on the weakened Bishop defence and after a few minutes Huddersfield were ahead with Bishop Burton struggling to get in the game. Huddersfield continued to control the game and soon they were two up after a goal mouth scramble. However Bishop were always a threat on the counter with Olivia Byas and Adam Barton offering good options going forward and strong support from Jack Hardeman and Jack White.
Bishop then got their first chance after Adam Barton won a short corner and from the short corner the ball eventually came to Jack White to slot in at the far post. However, before half time Huddersfield managed to grab another goal after a mix up in the Bishop defence allowing Huddersfield in to score.
The second half hit off with Bishop determined to push Huddersfield and cause them problems. Bishop remained strong in defence and kept Huddersfield out with strong defensive work from Jake Finnigan, Helen Waites, Rosie Bulmer and Chris Bostwick. However Huddersfield again managed to get through and goalie Robert Knapton could not prevent them from scoring again.
This did not stop Bishop though and kept threatening on the counter and after a good run from Olivia Byas and support from Adam Barton Bishop scored again with Adam Barton beating the keeper and putting John Gitau in to push into the goal.
Despite some brave goal keeping by Rob Knapton, Bishop were missing some of their regular players who were out with injuries and got extremely tired having been chasing the game for long periods of time and Huddersfield managed to get two goals towards the end of the match. The final score was Huddersfield New College 6 Bishop Burton 2.

Tired Netball team beaten by Franklin College

On Wednesday the 24th March 2010, Bishop Burton’s Netball team travelled to Franklin College for a BCS point’s game. Bishop were struggling for a strong squad as the last few weeks had seen some key players ruled out with injuries. Taking only 7 players and a bit tired as it was the second match of the week, Bishop were apprehensive as Franklin were relatively unknown to them. Franklin stated strong soon building up a lead. As has been the norm this season, Bishop took a while to get into the game but soon started scoring goals but Franklin already had a commanding lead. Good play from Demi Lidster stopped the gap in the score from becoming too wide. Robyn Deveraux made some excellent interceptions and Katie Burton scored some fantastic goals. As the team had played a College match the Monday night before, fatigue set in and not even some brilliant marking from Becky Sutcliffe and Lauren Hulme could stop the team from Franklin from extending their lead. All of the girls played really well and put in lots of effort with Annabel Burnett getting Player of the match but the final score was Franklin College 46 Bishop Burton 32.

Close game for Bishop Burton's Basketball team

Bishop Burton Vs Scarborough College 24th March 2010

For the fourth game of the season Bishop Burton were playing at home against Scarborough College, the match was a very close game throughout but the final score was Bishop Burton 37 Scarborough College 36.

Bishop Burton started the game of very strong defensively; they stuck to the 2-3 zone from the last game but had made a few changes as a few players were away. This choice of defensive play proved to work out very effectively as Scarborough struggled to make points in the paint and were forced to make shots from beyond the 3 point line, resulting in a lot of missed shots. From these missed shots Bishop were getting every defensive rebound and did so up until the third quarter when Scarborough started to get a few. The first quarter wasn’t a very high scoring game as both teams were playing very strong defence and couldn’t convert there chances, and finished 6 -7 in Scarborough favour.

Going into the second quarter Scarborough seemed to come at Bishop with everything and were really trying to push and get the lead but Bishop kept the same strong defence as they did in the first quarter and Scarborough still couldn’t brake down Bishops defence due to really good communication and motivating from the whole Bishop team. The turning point in this quarter came from some superb play from the likes of Lee Cessford and Sean Johnstone to take a couple of 3 pointers and convert them. These changed the score and for the first time in the game Bishop were leading and ended the 2 nd quarter leading by 2 points 18 – 16.

3 rd quarter both teams it seemed looked tired but Bishop still kept the same strong defence they had all game stopped Scarborough from scoring and then converted a chance at the other end they did this twice which meant now Bishop had a six point lead over Scarborough. The 3 rd quarter overall was a tight game both teams were playing tough defence but also converting chances. But again Bishop built up another 6 point leading at the end of the 3 rd quarter due to some good passing and communication, Bishop finally looked like a team after so many weeks of playing individually.

4 th quarter, Scarborough gave it there all and their point guard and shooting guard were causing a lot of problems stealing the ball and intercepting it and making good passes. The last minute of the game was very tense as Scarborough had once again broke Bishops lead down in half, and then scored again to make it a one point game. In the dying seconds Bishop had the ball but lost it and Scarborough had one last chance to win the game with a 3 pointer but it was missed. The ball was scrambled away by Peter Walker and then the whistle blew and the game ended Bishop Burton 37 Scarborough College 36. A well deserved second win of the season for Bishop Burton.

Reaseheath have no answer to dominant Bishop Burton display

Bishop Burton College 14 Reaseheath College 0 (3rd March 2010)

Bishop Burton entertained Reasheath in a Northern Counties match in a reverse of the fixture the previous month. With a few absentees, Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Chris Young, Olly Burns and Nick Robinson were called up from the HE team. Bishop Burton started brightly with the front two of Olly Burns and James Webb causing problems at every opportunity possible. It was Webb who opened the scoring after a great through ball by Tom Chippendale. Bishop Burton dominated the opening stages and the back four of Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Nathan Bell and Louis Cooper were hardly tested. Dominance started to pay with 3 more goals in the next 20 minutes with strikes from Chippendale, Burns and Webb. Bishop were playing some really good football, a lot of it one and two touches, and the mixture of FE and HE players was really paying dividends. Reaseheath launched their first meaningful attack after half an hour but a good save from Alex Gill kept the score at 4-0. Reaseheath where beginning to argue amongst themselves and Bishop Burton took full advantage of this with 2 more goals in the next five minutes. The first was from the penalty spot, after some good work from Brad Delves down the left was halted by a foul from the Reaseheath full back. James Webb took the resulting penalty to complete his hat trick. The sixth goal was scored by substitute Nick Robinson with his first touch of the ball. He finished a flowing move down the right between Nathan Bell and Jamie Williamson.

The half-time whistle went with Bishop Burton winning 6-0, a score which they truly deserved after a great attacking performance. Although 6-0 up, Manager Mark Frampton challenged his team to play using only one and two touches each and attempting to keep the ball below head height. This allowed the game to stay at a high tempo and stopped players just running with the ball. A few subs were made to freshen up the game and they all put in great performances, especially right back Shaun Robson. The scoring continued with goals from Tom Chippendale, Jamie Williamson, James Webb and two from Olly Burns which made the score 11-0. Reaseheath created their best chance of the game when a mistake from defender Luke Duerden allowed the Reasheath striker to go through one on one with Alex Gill but Gill produced a great save to keep a clean sheet. The remaining 20 minutes produced another 3 goals, the pick of the bunch being from Nathan Bell, who hit a shot on the turn from 20 yards into the bottom corner, his first goal for the college. The final whistle blew with the score at 14-0, a bit of a one-sided game but a confidence boost for the lads. All credit must go to Reaseheath though who never gave in and fought right to the end; their attitude was a credit to their College.

Bishop Burton College named as regional centre for Modern Pentathlon

Bishop Burton College has been named as a Regional Training Centre for Modern Pentathlon and the two organisations – Bishop Burton College and Pentathlon GB, have announced that the College will host a Modern Pentathlon Training Camp at the beginning of August.

The Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon was first introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm in 1912 and comprises the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running.

Peter Hart, the chief executive of Pentathlon GB paid a visit to the College to discuss the plans for creating a regional training centre for modern pentathlon including a training camp this summer.

Mr Hart said: “The College is a fantastic venue for pentathlon training with world-class facilities and we are delighted to work in partnership with Bishop Burton College, the students and community of Yorkshire in focussing our activities at the College.

“We are delighted to use the support we are receiving from Sport England to help us achieve this.”

Ann Marshall the regional development officer for Yorkshire continued: “By organising regular regional training at Bishop Burton College we can bring in world-class coaches for weekend or mid-week sessions and the athletes can train together as pentathletes rather than single-discipline athletes, which will benefit them enormously.

“The training camp which is planned for the summer will give regular athletes a concentrated opportunity to train in all five sports and will also be open to athletes from other parts of the country.”

Bishop Burton College’s director of sport Nick Gandy said “We have been working together for some time already and it was clear that a partnership would be of great mutual benefit and we are looking forward to working closely with Pentathlon GB and contributing towards Modern Pentathlon’s continued success at future Olympic Games.

“By establishing these links the athletes will benefit from the College’s fantastic resources and the learners will benefit by seeing the hard work and dedication of these sportsmen and women and perhaps by trying the sport themselves.”
